Beatles John
Imagine - The Beatles - John Lennon
Plastic Ono Band By John Lennon
Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon's debut solo album, is also his best one. Plastic Ono Band features Lennon's most intense recordings. This is not to say that he didn't record more great songs after his debut, but I would argue that the rest of his solo career is a bit of a let down when compared to this truly excellent debut.
"Mother opens the album. In this song Lennon works through his deepest childhood issues. For those of you who don't know Lennon's bio that specifically means talking about his parents leaving him to make it through his childhood with his aunt. When he was 17 his mother was killed by an off duty drunk police officer. The depressing closer, "My Mummy's Dead," is also about the pain of losing his mother.
The second track, "Hold On," is a simple song that might be seen as a "throwaway" especially with the ridiculous "cookie!" that you can hear at around 1 minute into it But I definitely don't see it that way, it's a great link between the much more intense "Mother" and "I Found Out."
This album contains some of his most heavy tracks including "I Found Out" which has a great dirty guitar riff and some really great lyrics and "Well Well Well" which showcases the "primal scream" method Lennon learned about in therapy.
The guitar part of "Look at Me" sounds an awful lot like "Julia" from The White Album but that's never kept me from loving it. It is just such a lovely song. I think what really makes this album work so wonderfully is the contrast between the beautiful songs like "Love," "Look at Me," and "Hold On" and the very intense songs like "Working Class Hero," "I Found Out," and "Well Well Well." And then there's "God" which I don't think much of musically but I do think it has some of his best lyrics.
Plastic Ono Band is one of eight John Lennon solo albums included in the John Lennon Remastered CD Box Set. This solo box is following in the footsteps of the very successful Remastered Beatles Stereo Box Set and Beatles Remastered Mono CD Box Set released in 2009.
