Right now, painted portraits are the preference of industries, universities, and hospitals who used to be content with photographs of their presidents and board chairmen. The rich and famous perceives portraits as affluence and heritage symbols.
She has done work throughout Western Europe, the United States and South Africa, where her husband used to work several years before. Though she has access to her sister's studio as well as her own, she would rather do the portrait painting at the house of her subject.
It would take three weeks for the artist to finish a portrait in a studio. It would not take that long painting on location, which would last only five days. Where she paints her picture affects the outcome of the painting itself. She would often have breakfast, lunch and dinner with the subject, affected by which way of life and the kind of home the portrait will hang in. A very well known actress had her portrait done by the artist, and she liked it so much she used it for the cover of her autobiography. She has made portraits of famous business people, including those who made tire and rubber and those who own the five and dime fortune. Also made by her were portraits of a tribal chief from Nigeria and a Dominican monk from Arkansas. Once her work spread around, she did not expect commissions from certain people across the globe.
There is just something flattering in the way the portraits are done, even if she herself doesn't flatter her subjects. Negotiating is involved when it comes to costume. Subjects would usually go for their favorite clothes or their university robes, and the artist abides by their wishes. For the portrait, she personally likes an informal dress for women. She makes suggestions on makeup and insists that hairdos be at least a day old.
She and her subjects often talk while she is painting. She gets their lips moving so that she can get the appearance of a smile. You can really see in a portrait if a person is bored or not, she said. By going through a photograph book that shows her work, clients can decide if they want a full body, half body, or head and shoulders shot, as well as a formal or casual pose.
There is a growing popularity for ink, oil, and tempera in sepia tones as well. Sometimes she captures the person in more ways than one on canvas, leaving the most detailed sketch in the foreground, which is one way of portraying children. It comes out looking just like something taken from a sketch book. It was in a two woman show she had with her sister 20 years ago that this woman started her career through a gallery owner who insisted on displaying a self portrait of the artist. It was the highlight of the show.
