Carving Pine
Carving a pine lizard part 1
Writing bureau desks made from Oak & Pine
Bureaus have a cyclical reputation coming in and out of fashion. To begin with oak writing bureaus were much more detailed with intricate carving and were found in the women's bedroom where she could write in privacy. Over time and changes in culture writing bureaus have become available in a range of different solid woods. In the early days writing bureaus were often made by hand and featured additional styling making it possible to find some very ornate writing bureau.
The writing bureau eventually became a useful piece of furniture that is now seen more often in people's studies or living rooms as opposed to women's bedrooms. A range of woods were used in the crafting of writing bureaus and for some time mahogany writing bureau desks were even more popular than oak bureaus. Most writing bureaus have a flap at the front which comes down to form the desk part of the writing bureau. Writing bureaus feature a number of cabin holes, small drawers and cupboards in the top part. These small sections of a bureau were used to store stationary and other writing materials.
During the 20th century it became the standard for bureaus to be built from veneers and engineered woods like MDF but over time people have a preference for solid wood again. Modern home owners now much prefer a solid pine writing bureau or an oak writing bureau as engineered and veneered bureaus and furniture have gone out of fashion. It is possible to find Victorian writing bureaus and other antique bureaus at auction and these can fetch a large amount of cash.
The continuously changing styles of writing bureau reflects the changing time and culture, which went from solid wood to engineered wood and has now back to solid wood like pine & oak. People like to see solid oak bureaus and natural pine writing bureaus as they make an attractive and useful addition to many living rooms. While the taste for writing bureaus dropped with the rise of the home PC, this has changed now that most people prefer to use a laptop rather than its large bulky counterpart. People can enjoy sitting at their mahogany or solid oak writing bureau when they are working on their laptop while adding a touch of style to the room they are in. Whether you choose to have a pine writing bureau or a more antique styled mahogany bureau, the writing bureau is an ideal piece of furniture that can always be incorporated practically into the modern home.
