Can Omega 3 supplements in our diet really work?
Have you seen the fish finger adverts? Have you seen the flora adverts? They are just a couple of examples of many food products available on the market today containing Omega 3. But are we actually getting enough of them?
Omega 3 is as necessary for all of us, as a nutritionally balanced diet and regular excercise. It is needed by both young and old for brain development, good mental health, healthy hearts and strong bones.
Fish is one of the best sources of Omega 3, in particular the oily fishes such as trout and tuna. However, to eat enough fish to get the benefit, we would expose ourselves to damaging levels of toxins which can be found in todays fish stocks. It can also be consumed from other sources such as Flaxseed but that is not so easily added into our diets.
Omega 3 contains substances called DHA and EPA which are present in all of us. DHA is very important since it makes up 50% of the fatty acid in our brain. Reduced levels in our brains can result in poor brain development, poor mental health, depression and other related conditions. Omega 3 has an important cardiovascular role in our hearts and bloodstreams. If reduced levels are present in our blood stream, this can lead to all kinds of cardiovascular problems.
Whilst we may be happy to take on board the advice to increase our consumption of foods containing Omega 3, it may not necessarily be practical. A good quality fish oil supplement offers a superb alternative for us since they can benefit an already well-balanced lifestyle.
