Graffiti Art
Graffiti - Art Crime
Graffiti is, in a way, the first art in the world. It appeared as long ago as 30,000 before the Common Era in the form of prehistoric cave paintings and pictographs, and although it may certainly have a different shape and form now, the same artistic trends can be traced. Yet there is a question that arises now which is a new problem - a legal one which continues to trouble graffiti artists.
From the ancient graffiti scientists have been able to find out a lot about the lifestyle and education level of the ancient people who created it. Modern graffiti can give the same sort of information about modern people. Much of contemporary graffiti is the mirror of a social or political position, reflecting the artist's attitudes toward political, economical and cultural events. Graffiti has short life, but photo cameras and the internet make the images omnipresent and eternal.
As we can see graffiti has a long history from the ancient times till present. Modern graffiti originated in New York City, beginning with those who went in for tagging on the Subway, later relocating to the street and finally moving to art galleries. In 1979 the art dealer Claudio Bruni placed the art gallery in Rome at the disposal of graffiti artists Lee Quinones and Fab 5 Freddy, and that was the starting point of graffiti spreading in the rest of the world. Later in 1983 two films were produced which were dedicated to graffiti: "Wild Style" by Charlie Ahearn and documentary "Style Wars" by Tony Silver and Henry Chalfant.
Graffiti is popular and loved by youth all over the world, and as such has been used in many advertising campaigns of such famous brands as IBM (for Linux) and Sony (for PSP), and in addition graffiti can be found in video games. Lots of graffiti artists have now become designers of snow or skateboards, and moreover a French group of graffiti artists 123Klan make designs for Nike, Adidas, McDonald`s and Coco Cola. Now works of graffiti artists are selling in the biggest art auctions and their price does not yield to traditional contemporary artworks.
There is no doubt that graffiti is becoming perceived as art, however it is still a crime too. Governments continue to toughen punishment for graffiti artists. And the reason is not only related to issues of vandalism and the losses that it causes. In some cases, the problem is that graffiti is a type of the street art that makes a really powerful tool in struggles for social and political rights. Graffiti attracts the attention of any person on the street who happens to see it, encourages him to think, and a government cannot always cover it up or erase it before it has reached people.
However, a perpetual war between governments and graffiti artists has in some ways benefitted the latter. In order to survive they made their works really beautiful and interesting so that owners of the graffited buildings leave it for a long time; they invented new types of street art like LED art, murals, stencil art, sticker art, street installations and others; they help each other, for example just recently Banksy (now a world famous graffiti artist and activist) transferred nearly $146 000, earned from the selling of the reproductions of his works, to the Russian performance group "War", whose members had been arrested for their graffiti of a phallus on the leaf bridge in front of the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation (FSB) in Saint Petersburg.
Of course not all graffiti art has value or beauty, just as not all drawings or paintings do. But graffiti art is increasingly developing into a fully-fledged and sophisticated art and protest movement.
